Andre Heimgartner has ensured the last event of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship was a great one, coming home with a career-best solo driver race finish on Sunday at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500.

Earlier in the day, the Plus Fitness racer made it to his second-consecutive Top Ten Shootout, claiming 9th on the grid for today’s 250km race which saw him overcome a failed cool suit to carve his way through to 6th position.

Sunday didn’t have exclusivity on impressive drives from the 23 year old either, with the Melbourne-based Kiwi driving from the rear of the grid in Saturday’s 250km race to finish in 8th position after having missed the set-up during Saturday’s qualifying.

“What a weekend, and what a way to finish out the 2018 season,” Heimgartner said.

“Saturday was a real interesting race for us, we missed the set-up in qualifying and so I started dead last – that certainly isn’t what we wanted and never did I think that we could turn it around so drastically for a top eight result.

“I put my head down and made sure I stayed out of trouble, and that I was ready to take advantage when others were spreading off. The car had good pace as well which was very pleasing after it being off the mark in qualifying, and we did some more work with it on Saturday evening ready for Sunday’s action.

“After another Top Ten Shootout and starting 9th on the grid, Sunday’s race was all about strategy and we were able to bring it home in sixth position – my best solo driver race finish and a great way to finish out the year.

“I desperately wanted that fifth place of course, but after having my cool suit failing midway through the race in very hot conditions, I had nothing left in me when it came to the end of the 250 kilometres.

“With two solid races where I was able to be right up there, I am really happy with how the weekend has panned out.”

With all who follow the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship now turning their attention to the 2019 season, Heimgartner is hoping to release news of his plans for next year soon.

“I am talking to a few teams and I have a few things going, I can’t talk about it just yet but I expect to be in Supercars again next year – it is more likely to happen than not and I look forward to being able to share my 2019 plans with all of my valued supporters soon,” Heimgartner explained.
